How I Learn Hard Things

A note to self: the problem before the polished solution.

Abstract thoughts

Naive version: every new token checking every earlier key for context. What makes that slow? Why isn't it enough? What does a better approach change? One step back from the finished artifact; the problem gets clearer, and the solution has a reason to exist.

Recently: Mistral Large 4—1.05T total parameters, 49B active; a mixture-of-experts model. The rabbit hole: what happens after a token comes in? Not the neural-net math first; the pipeline, in plain language, and what each stage makes possible.

Attention: a token's vector as a query; earlier tokens' keys and values in the KV cache; context gathered before the feed-forward stage. The baseline: search every key. MLA, gated MLA, sparse attention—different ways to reduce what is stored or searched. Which problem does each solve? What context reaches the next stage?
